PARABLE MAGAZINE
‘A parable is a simple story or analogy offered to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson.’
The PARABLE magazine series is my new exploration of visual storytelling in which I merge essays and imagery around a theme. Each edition focuses on an aspect of my growth as a photographer, but also seeks to offer some vulnerability about my own story in order to explore our collective journey as human beings. Through a combination of curated photography and thoughtful prose, PARABLE fosters a space for reflection on photography as an artform whilst also seeking a greater understanding of the human condition.
This magazine will be released bi-annually and each edition is available as either a physical copy or digital download (PDF and audio MP3 files) from my store.
SHADOW WORK
Vol. 5 January 2025
In this edition I share a series of images featuring the hard light and shadows of our city streets and talk about the reasons why I think this style of photography captures our attention. I also talk about how the ‘shadow times’ we pass through in life refine us into human beings who have more to offer, and how we can make friends with the shadow which lurks within all of us.
GOING RURAL
Vol. 4 July 2024
In this edition I share a series of intimate landscape images and pastoral scenes made since my move up to rural North Yorkshire. I also talk about why I made the move out of the big city, how it’s affected my photography, and the ups and downs of seeking a quieter life in the countryside.
KEEPING FAITH
Vol. 3 January 2024
In this edition I feature images showing the beautiful interplay of light and shadow within some of the stunning churches I’ve visited on my travels. I also share my own very personal story with the church and how I think about faith today, including why I still love to go in to old church buildings to take a quiet moment to sit in the pews of these evocative buildings and whisper out a prayer.
THE NAMIBIA STORY
Vol. 2 July 2023
In this edition I share a body of work I made on a trip to Namibia including landscapes of the Namib desert, as well as portraits made with the Himba tribe. I also speak about my experience growing up in Africa, how it shaped me, why Namibia was the location for a key moment in my growth, my approach to this portrait project in particular, and how to recover when everything just seems to be going wrong.
WINDOW LIGHT
Vol. 1 January 2023
In this edition I tackle the subject of window light in photography: how windows serve to shape light into dark interiors, dealing with glass reflections, the concept of aperture, and finally using all this to talk about how we can be more conscious about flooding light into our own inner worlds.
