I've been doing photography for a long time. I taught at the University of Texas at Austin Fine Arts College, I've done photography as a business for about 40 years and I've written five relatively popular, technical photography books for a major publisher. That's all to preface what I'm saying here: This book, The Art of Street Photography, is the best photography book I have read and experienced in the 21st century. No exceptions. Sean and Joshua have created a book that is so well written and illustrated that it defies belief. Instead of the usual "nuts and bolts" step-by-step beginner technical stuff they have written treatise that carefully explains how to be intentional, mindful and well focused on your creativity as an artist with a camera. I was delighted by the quality of the writing which isn't the usual patronizing, dumbed down stuff but presumes that their readers have good brains and know how to use them. If anyone came to me and asked for the definitive photography book for this era it would the this book. I wish I could give it six stars. It's that good. I hope they continue to gift us with books like this. I am so appreciative of their work.

Sean Tucker and Joshua Jackson have ranked at the top of my list of favorite street photographers since I discovered their work 7 years ago. If this were merely your standard coffee table book of images with no context or descriptions, I still would have happily ordered it Day 1. However, unsurprisingly to anyone who knows their work, this is much deeper than that. This is both a how-to and a philosophical treatise on the ethics of shooting street photography in an era where we have less privacy as individuals than we ever have before. It is an exploration of how to elevate street photography past its history as informal reportage into an artistic form that can still capture the feeling of a place at a particular time while also respecting the people who appear there. This is a book written by two incredibly thoughtful people on how they create their art, and it serves as an antidote and inspiration in this age of AI-generated slop and soulless Instagram like-harvesting.

As someone who has followed the work of both authors for a long time, I knew The Art of Street Photography would be good but even with these lofty expectations it has goes well beyond them. Firstly, the physical production of the book makes it stand out from other titles in this area. It has a substantial weight and high spec paper / reproductions that immediately makes it feel like a permanent fixture for your library rather than a one-off read. What I appreciate most about this book is the text itself. In an era where our attention spans are constantly under siege, this book demands that you slow down. The long-form writing is masterfully articulated and incredibly refreshing. The authors invite you into a deeper, intellectual conversation about why we take photos, shifting the focus away from the instant gratification of online validation and toward personal meaning. In short, it’s full to the brim with outstanding images and genuine wisdom. And much of the information in this book would be of value to photographers of any genre. Highly recommended.

Joshua K. Jackson is a photographer based in London, UK. His work explores how everyday elements on the street can transcend their initial forms and take on deeper significance.
Joshua's work has been exhibited across the UK, Europe, USA and Asia. He has published two monographs of his work, Sleepless In Soho (2020) and Modern Paradox (2022).

Sean Tucker is a photographer, filmmaker, author and public speaker based in the UK. Over his career to date he has helped individuals, charities and big multinational corporations tell stories across more than 20 countries.
In more recent years he began a popular YouTube channel where he seeks to inspire other photographers and creatives from all walks of life. He has also published The Meaning in the Making (2021), a philosophy for the creative life.
